Urges will come on suddenly, escalate, peak, then crash and dissipate, like a wave in the ocean. Instead of giving in, accept the urge for what it is and ride it out by applying positive coping skills. This is known as ‘urge surfing’.
Take a mental inventory of how you experience the urge. The purpose of this exercise is not to eliminate the urge, but rather to experience it in a new way. Urge surfing will help you understand your cravings. And this understanding will prepare you to cope with urges that might otherwise trigger a relapse.
